Singapore Eat: You Tiao Mei Tau Suan You Tiao (油条妹豆爽油条) @ Bukit Batok

You Tiao Mei (油条妹) is a fried snack chain with several outlets across Singapore. It has a new stall in Bukit Batok West Hawker Centre selling signature tau suan (豆爽), a traditional mung bean dessert, with you tiao (fried dough, 油条). Although the snacks are mostly for takeaway, tables are available in the hawker centre for eat-in.

Aside from tau suan and fried dough, there are other snacks like carrot cake sticks, yam / sweet potato sticks, fried banana, banana balls, curry puffs, butterfly puffs, etc. This stall has soya pudding with/without glass jelly as dessert too. There are two “New Style You Tiao” to try too but not available everyday, so don’t miss them when they are available.

You Tiao Mei (油条妹豆爽油条): Wide range of fried snacks

Top-left: The Tau Suan (豆爽) dessert is full of split mung beans in mild-sweet starchy soup and added with half a crispy fried dough. It is a nice dessert to have after meals or for coffee breaks.

Top-right: The You Tiao (油条), the fried dough, is well-fried and crunchy, not hard nor too chewy.

Bottom-left: The Charcoal & Orh Nee You Tiao (竹炭芋泥油条), 5 pcs/order, is a new-style you tiao that is made with charcoal powder, stuffed with orh nee (real yam paste) and speckled with white sesame seeds before frying. It is crispy, not hard and with soft yam paste that gives off a mellow yam flavour.

Bottom-right: The other new-style you tiao is the Png Kueh You Tiao (糯米饭粿油条), inspired by the peach-shape png kueh (pink Teochew cake stuffed with glutinous rice). Instead of the smooth skin of typical png kueh that is made with glutinous rice flour, crispy pinkish you tiao replaced that skin, stuffed with typical png kueh ingredients (glutinous rice, tiny shreds of mushrooms, peanuts, etc) and fried. It is similarly crispy with soft filling and is a different way to eat png kueh. Definitely must try too!

The you tiao snacks are crunchy snacks and best to finish them before they turn soft.

Other fried snacks I have tried include:

Top-left: The Banana Balls (5 pcs/order) is different from fried banana fritter where small cuts of banana is coated with thick batter, that has white sesame seeds, and fried. It is a mild-sweet snack with banana flavour.

Top-right: The Carrot Cake Sticks (10 pcs/order) is slightly crispy outside and soft inside with nice taste of traditional carrot cake.

Bottom-left: The Curry Puff has crispy crust with sweet curry filling and not spicy.

Bottom-right: The 3-in-1 Sweet Cake has a slice of sweet year cake (年糕) sandwiched between a slice of yam and a slice of sweet potato — it’s 3 flavours in one snack.

Beginning 2026, You Tiao Mei added two new items to their range of fried snacks to welcome the new year. The Mala Croquette You Tiao (3 pcs/order) has pieces of fried dough stuffed with mala-flavoured mashed potato and corns. It is crispy as always and has a nice mala flavour but mildly-spicy. The Orh-Nee Balls (芋泥球, 4 pcs/order) look very similar to the banana balls, except that the sesame-crust balls are filled with yam paste. The yam filling is mild-sweet with nice yam flavour. The yam balls are as nice and crispy as the banana balls.

All fried snacks are well-fried, crispy, non-oily and best consumed before they turn cold. Although reheating is possible, it may change the snacks’ original textures and make them harder.

If Bukit Batok West Hawker Centre is a little far, You Tiao Mei has another stall in Bukit Batok MRT Station selling similar list of fried snacks and desserts as takeaways only.
