Kedai Makanan Hakka Sawit (好客坊), a well-known family-run eatery, is highly regarded among locals and travellers for its authentic, traditional Hakka comfort food and aromatic Nanyang coffee. The eatery is located along Kelapa Sawit Wall Art Street (沙威笔画街), under a sunflower rooftop in a quaint Hakka village in Kulai, Johor.

Hakka Sawit’s main entrance fronted Jalan Kelapa Sawit 3 with its back entrance facing the art street, providing easy access for visitors to the art street. The eatery has a dine-in section as well as a take-away section for its pastries, like Hakka choy bans (菜板), peach kuehs (桃板), png kuehs (饭板), egg tarts, curry puffs, etc. They offer Hakka dishes such as lei cha (擂茶 / ground tea rice / thunder tea rice), yam abacus (算盘子), yong tau foo (酿豆腐), fried pork (客家炸肉), minced meat rice (卤肉饭), nasi lemak, etc.
Aside from food, local produces, like sweet potatoes, bananas, passion fruits, guavas, bottled honey, bottled ginger lemon, etc, are also sold here.

Hakka Sawit has 4 flavours of choy bans (菜板, vegetable dumplings): leek, chive, turnip (mang kuang) and preserved mustard. These ingredients are wrapped in slippery, chewy translucent rice flour skins with fried beancurd, dried shrimps, etc. The emphasis is on the fragrance of the vegetable ingredients and crunchiness of the turnip sheds. They have distinct, mellow flavours and best to eat them fresh — if buying to take back to Singapore, make sure to make a beeline for your home after purchase, do not loiter in Johor Bahru.

Hakka Sawit serves Johor-produced Liberica coffee, sourced from My Liberica Coffee, which has a plantation near the border of Kulai. The Nanyang coffee is brewed using specialty white coffee (roasted without sugar).

The Liberica kopi-O is served with a layer of crema on top and has a very nice, unique aroma that is unlike other traditional kopi that uses bitter Robusta coffee beans, sometimes blending with acidic Arabica beans. The woody, nutty flavours and smoky aroma of Liberica has always been my favourite — and I don’t spoil it with milk. When visiting Kelapa Sawit Wall Art Street, don’t miss having a cuppa when taking a break.

To experience authentic Hakka delights, Hakka Sawit is the place to go— and also its Liberica coffee. Next time, I will plan to visit Kelepa Sawit closer to lunch to go for their Hakka dishes.
