Johor Bahru Eat: Uncle Five Coffee (伍叔咖啡) @ KSL City Mall

Uncle Five Coffee (伍叔咖啡) is a Nanyang kopitiam chain that began in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, serving “Taste that Belongs to Malaysian”. It opened its first store in KSL City Mall towards the end of 2023. Located outside the rear entrance of KSL City Mall, the kopitiam is accessible without having to go into the mall and is opened at 9am to serve breakfast.

As expected of a Nanyang-style kopitiam, Uncle Five Coffee serves local Malaysian and Singaporean delights. Although the restaurant serves “Taste that Belongs to Malaysian”, there are Singapore Fried Prawn Noodle and Hainanese Chicken Rice on its menu too. Aside from common lists of toasts, nasi lemak, mee hoon kueh, different flavours of noodle / rice dishes, etc, there are vegetarian, western and spaghetti dishes too.

Uncle Five Coffee has an “Everyday Special” menu where certain dishes are available only on specific days — e.g. Hainanese Chicken Rice is available only from Friday to Sunday from 10:30am onwards.

Uncle Five Coffee: Menu

Uncle Five Coffee serves traditional white coffee — premixed without sugar. The White Coffee O is full-bodied, aromatic and non-bitter. This is my usual cup of kopi-O at Uncle Five Coffee.

Try the Butter White Coffee O with savoury butter too — and less sugar. Sipping traditional kopi with a mellow sweet-savoury flavour is another enjoyment.

The Heng Hwa Seafood Fried Mee Hoon (兴化海鲜炒米粉) is one dish that is lesser seen on menus of most Nanyang kopitiams. The famous rice vermicelli, from Xinghua of Putien (莆田.兴华), is stir-fried with squids, prawns, egg, mushroom and vegetables. It is a simple dish yet tasty and with nice flavours.

The Penang Char Kway Teow (槟城炒粿条) is fried with yellow noodle and broad flat kway teow —similar to Singapore-style char kway teow — but with prawns, fishcake slices, egg, beansprouts and spring onions like any Penang-style char kway teow. The dry-style noodle dish is delightful and not oily.

The Roti Canai with Curry Chicken (印度煎饼咖喱鸡) is served with 2 pieces of roti canai with a bowl of curry chicken sprinkled with scallion. The roti canai are nicely fried and crispy. The curry chicken is very tender with potato that is well-cooked, soft and yet does not break up easily. The creamy curry is non-oily and with delicious sweet-spicy flavours of the spices.

The self-made Pan-Fried Radish Cake (自制煎萝卜糕) is served just-fried and piping-hot with spicy sambal chilli and garnished with crispy fried shallot and scallions. With crispy, lightly-fried surface, it is best to finish the radish cake before it turns cold. It is nice as a side dish.

Have breakfast or nice kopi at Uncle Five Coffee while waiting for KSL City Mall to open at 10am. The restaurant has another outlet in Taman Sutera Utama and has also opened new outlets in Crest Austin, R&F Mall and Kulai too.
