Johor Bahru Eat: Restoran Ba Jie Bah Kut Teh (八戒肉骨茶) @ Taman Century

Located in Taman Century, at a road junction barely 100 metres from KSL Resort Hotel / KSL City Mall, is a coffee shop-style restaurant that is Ba Jie Bah Kut Teh (八戒肉骨茶) in the day and Da Cheng Lok Lok (大成渌渌) in the evening. It is a shared premise that is occupied by different stalls throughout the day — and night.

Everyday, before 3pm, Ba Jie Bah Kut Teh will manage the premise and sell its claypot bak kut teh. There are two other stalls: Tien Tien Wan Tan Mee (天天好面) serves noodle dishes and Guan Dessert (关帝烽火甜品铺) serves traditional desserts, including ice kacang and cendol.

Ba Jie Bak Kut Teh (八戒肉骨茶): Stall

Ba Jie has several styles of claypot bak kut teh. Its Signature Bone Bah Kut Teh (招牌大骨/小骨) has option for either “big bone” or “small bone”. Also available are the typical Malaysia-style soup-based Bah Kut Teh (肉骨茶), dry-style Dry Bah Kut Teh (干肉骨茶) in dark sauce and Lala Bah Kut Teh (啦啦肉骨茶) with white clams added. Apart from pork ribs and other piggy parts, sea cucumber is also served as a claypot dish.

The single-serving Signature Bone Bah Kut Teh — opted for big bone (招牌大骨) — comes with a rather chunky portion of pig belly meat that comprises bone, meat and gelatinous skin. The “big bone” meat, boiled in herbal soup with mushrooms and vegetables, is very tender. The soup has a pleasant herbal taste that is not too strong.

The Malaysia-style Bah Kut Teh (肉骨茶) can be added-on with any number of ingredients to the herbal soup — we opted for pork ribs and added fried tofu skin, tofu puffs, enoki mushrooms and mouth mushrooms. It has similar herbal soup but with a slightly stronger savoury taste — probably from the add-on ingredients. The pork ribs are tender too.

The small-size, dry-style Dry Bah Kut Teh (干肉骨茶) — with pig’s trotter as recommended by the staff — is cooked in claypot with strips of cuttlefish, onion, dark sweet-savoury sauce, etc, and garnished with scallions. The pig’s trotter has both soft skin and tender meat that are more suitable for cooking in hot claypot and are still tender. Its soft bones add some crunchiness to the meat that is coated with the thick, tasty sauce. The dish is accompanied by a bowl of herbal bak kut teh soup but with a higher savoury note.

Ba Jie’s claypot bak kut teh dishes are much stronger in flavours as compared to other bak kut teh restaurants. It offers an additional option to go for in Johor Bahru.
