Johor Bahru Eat: YuJi Mee (余记面) Sibu Kam Pua Mee & Sarawak Kolo Mee @ Permas Jaya

YuJi Mee (余记面) is a popular noodle shop renowned for its authentic Sibu Kam Pua Mee and Sarawak Kolo Mee. It is most famous for its signature 3-Colour Kolo Mee, allowing diners to enjoy white, black, and red flavours of the noodle dish on a single plate. The shop is located in Permas Jaya, Johor Bahru, just few units from Kulai Shi Wah Bak Kut Teh (古来世华肉骨茶).

In addition to the two signature dishes of YuJi Mee, the shop also offers dry-tossed mee pok with char siew slices and fried meat wantons (云吞, a.k.a. “扁肉” in Minnan areas of China). Aside from the famous 3-Colour Kolo Mee, there is also a 2-colour version — I believe any 2 types of flavour can be selected out of the 3 available.

YuJi Mee (余记面): Menu

The white Sarawak Kolo Mee (砂劳越) is served with char siew slices, fried minced meat and fried pork lard on curly noodle dry-tossed in white sauce and garnished with fried shallot and scallions and a bowl of clear soup with two meat balls and same set of garnishes. The noodle is springy with a chewy texture and the white sauce, made from a mix of condiments including lard oil, is light, savoury and aromatic. The char siew is tender and juicy when chewed and the fried minced meat and fried pork lard add their flavours and crispy textures to the noodle. The soup with tender meat balls has rich flavours of fried shallots and spring onions and not salty. This dish is simply delicious.

YuJi Mee’s 3-Colour Kolo Mee is attractive but is meant for 2 or 3 diners. Unless I bring someone to try the dish with me, otherwise, I will try all three flavours separately. And not forgetting also their other signature dish — the Sibu Kam Pua Mee.
