Singapore Eat: Swatow City (汕头城) Teochew Cuisine @ Bukit Batok

Swatow City (汕头城) is renowned for its authentic traditional Teochew cuisine, Teochew-style seafood dishes and dim sum. The Chinese restaurant is located on 2nd floor of Bukit Batok HomeTeam NS building, near Bukit Gombak Park.

The first time I dined at Swatow City was for my grandmother’s birthday celebration and I was amazed by the delicious dishes — but I was unable to take decent photos of those dishes as hands were already grabbing the food before I could snap some shots. Anyway, me and my family revisited the restaurant again two months later to have dinner — and took nicer photos.

Apart from typical Chinese-style braised peanuts, crispy fried fish skins are also served as titbits while waiting for the food to be ready. Crispy fried fish skins originated from the coastal areas of China, especially Hong Kong and Guangdong areas, and that is where Swatow (汕头) and Teochew (潮州) are located — do you know that the salted egg version was invented in Singapore?

One of Swatow City’s popular dishes is their roasted ducks. We have half of a Black Truffle Roasted Duck (黑松露烤鸭). The nicely roasted duck meat has a nice black truffle aroma, with crispy skin and tender meat.

The Iced Sweet & Sour Kurobuta Pork with Lychee (冰镇黑豚咕噜肉) is a cold dish served with the sweet & sour fried pork meat served on ice cubes. The meat has a firmer texture due to the coldness and offers a unique taste experience. The dish can be requested to be served hot but best to try the original iced version.

The Asparagus with Lily Bulbs & Macadamia Nut (夏果鲜百合芦笋) is a unique vegetable dish that is seldom seen elsewhere. Soft, crunchy asparagus and soft, sweet macadamia nuts stir-fried with mushroom, carrot slices and shallots make this another delectable dish not to be missed.

The Sugar-Coated Fried Yam (返沙香芋条) has cuts of yam that are fried till crispy on the outside and soft inside. The yam is eaten with crystallised sugar icing and may be a little sweet. It is nice as a dessert after meals.

Swatow City has a sister branch in Toa Payoh known as Swatow Seafood Restaurant, established since 2010, serving similar Teochew cuisine, dim sum and wider range of seafood dishes.
