Johor Buys: What to Buy in Johor, Malaysia (柔佛)

The State of Johor (柔佛), in West Malaysia, offers a ton of eating options with wide varieties of local Malaysian delights, Nanyang specialties, international cuisines, etc. Aside from take-away specialties of eateries, there are many food stuffs, especially traditional pastries, cakes, breads, buns, cookies, etc, from traditional bakeries and modern confectioneries to buy and take home or as gifts for others. And also coffee factories or their retail outlets for coffee beans and coffee powders.

I travelled around Johor frequently — including Johor Bahru, Kulai, Pontian, Kota Tinggi, Mersing, Kluang, Batu Pahat (including Yong Peng), Muar and Tangkak (not visited Segamat yet) — and have built a list of nice, popular shops for great pastries and such. And here, I am sharing my ever-expanding list.

Kulai Buy: Lian Pang Cake & Confectionery (联邦蛋糕西点) Old-School Bakes

Lian Pang Cake & Confectionery, a traditional bakery, is famous for its old-school peanut / chocolate rice sponge cakes and wedding cakes. Get a yuan yang!
Kulai & Johor Bahru Buy: Verbena Pastry & Bakery

Verbena is a confectionery chain known for its wide range of affordable, visually-appealing Japanese-French inspired pastries, cakes, breads with low sweetness.
Tangkak Buy: Chop Hua Bee (和美饼家) Big Savoury Tau Sar Peah + Nikko Bakery

Chop Hua Bee is a famous bakery for its big-size tau sar peah and traditional pastries. Coexisting is Nikko Bakery, making Japanese cakes, French pastries, etc.
Batu Pahat Buy: GN Food & Biscuits (满發传统手工糕饼店) Teochew La Piah

GN Food & Biscuit, a traditional bakery, specialises in several types of Teochew la piah (潮州朥饼). There are tau sar peah and other Chinese pastries.
Pontian Buy: Chai Huat Heng (再发兴饼家) Traditional Pastries @ Pontian Kechil

Chai Huat Heng (再发兴饼家), a family-run traditional bakery, makes a wide varieties of Chinese traditional pastries, wedding cakes, longevity buns, mooncakes, etc.
Muar Buy: Seremban (S’ban) Siew Pow (芙蓉烧包) @ Pekan Muar

Seremban Siew Pow offers the famous Seremban-style siew bao, egg tarts and local-Chinese pastries. They have Muar-specialty mee siput too.
Muar Eat: Sai Kee Kopi 434 Cafe (才记434咖啡)

Started as a coffee producer, Sai Kee Kopi 434 operates cafes to serve its “elephant” coffee beans with Malaysian delights and sell their coffee products.
Pontian Buy: The Cookies Factory @ Pontian Kechil

The Cookies Factory, a premium cookies and biscuit manufacturer, offers a wide range of colourful cookies, and mooncakes, that are great as gifts or as party treats.
Pontian Drink: Air Nira Kelapa (Coconut Wine) & Diamond Coconuts @ Pontian Kechil

The place that offers air nira kelapa (椰花酒), or local coconut wine / toddy, and diamond coconuts for sales is near Pasar Awam Pontian. Whatsapp / call before going.
